It is an unfortunate but undeniable fact that the United States is facing a serious mental health crisis.According to CNN, 90% of adults believe that we are in a state of crisis, with specific groups being among the most at risk. This includes teenagers, minorities, and veterans, just to name a few.
The State of Rhode Island is experiencing this crisis at a rate comparable to that of the nation. The confluence of many factors: the Covid pandemic, toxic social media, political stressors, and isolation brought about from work-from-home have combined to create an atmosphere in society ripe for mental illness.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. WPRO is committing to spend the month doing a deep dive into all facets of mental health issues. Throughout the month, WPRO hosts will address the topic from a different point of view in an in-depth manner. They will address the stigma and the solutions; they will talk to experts and those who are suffering. The hope is that we can work together to begin a journey to mitigate the impact of mental illness in our community.
