Burnell Taylor, 19 who hails from New Orleans, LA is the most recent contestant to be eliminated from American Idol. On a season that is in favor of the female contestants Burnell seemed to be the front runner for the boys. Burnell talks to Hot 106’s Bekah Berger & Trey Miller about the, “gut feeling” he had leading up to his elimination, why he’s happy to have been sent home, his rumored feud with fellow male contestant Lazaro Arbos and his, “more than friends” relationship with female contestant Amber Holcomb.
Bekah Berger: It’s been almost a week since you left American Idol; how are you feeling today?
Burnell: Um, I am feeling so good, I mean it’s been three months since I’ve been home, so the fact that I’m home, you know just chillin'. I’m not chillin’ for too long though because I have to get to work. Um, but just being home is just amazing, but I will say this, it’s crazy that I went from being on the show to now, I am a fan because I have to watch it on TV tonight.
BB: You’ve said in a few prior interviews that you were kind of happy to have been let go from American Idol, why is that?
Burnell: Um because, well it’s pretty obvious that a girl is going to win, so you know I’m just so thankful to have been one of the two guys that was still left standing. I stood in a line with thousands of people I didn’t even think I would get that far. The fact that I was like top 7, that is amazing. That’s an amazing accomplishment and on top of that let’s not forget that’s the spot Jennifer Hudson wenthome… so it’s not about what you do, it’s what you do afterwards.
Trey: I actually think winning American idol is a curse because you know the people who don’t end up winning, sometimes do better than the people who do win, except for you know Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Burnell: Yeah all the people that were in the beginning, but I mean you know it’s just a platform that’s given to us and it’s our responsibility to make something out of nothing and that’s what I am trying to do.
Bekah: When you’re singing what could be your potential last song; not knowing if the judges will use the save on your or not; what’s going through your head?
Burnell: Well that whole week I knew that I was going home, um because I don’t know I just had a feeling in my bones. I kept telling Candice you know I am going home and she never wanted to hear me, but you know I knew that I definitely knew I was going home when they announced who was in the top three because I knew that Lazero was in the top three. I knew they wanted a girl to win so at that point I was like ok two boys are not making it so I knew it was going to be out of me and Laz so you know I walked up, me and Janelle walked up and you know I pay attention to the little things and that kind of stuff outside of the box. You recognize little things and I always noticed every week the person that’s on the left side is always the person who has to sing for their life. Janelle kept telling me that you know “Burnell I'm going home, I’m going home," but in my head I’m like, "Janelle, no you’re not." I know who’s about to sing for their life, and when I first started I was like you know I need to get this save but then in the middle of the song like something just came on stage and told me I wasn’t getting the save so that’s why I acknowledged all the contestants and stuff because I just wanted them to know that even though were in a competition, I am so very proud of all of them.
Trey: How was your relationship with Lazaro when you left because I know a few weeks ago when you did the song together with Lazaro and Devin, it seemed a little tense on stage when Nicki Minaj was critiquing you guys.
Burnell: Yeah, I think this is the first place I want to clear this up. I was NOT by any means throwing anybody under the bus because I think that’s what people kind of took and ran with it. That wasn’t my whole point. My frustration was, you know, as a brotherhood I was very disappointed because I knew we were the three guys that was representing for the boys. So you know when we kind of didn’t go out there and sell it like I knew we could have it was very disappointing and I am a person that kind of shows when I am disappointed and I am not afraid to admit that so I was very disappointed and even me I feel like I did a poor job too so as a whole I was disappointed in us as a whole. So I mean me and Laz are good I mean we have to go on tour so we can’t hate each other.
Bekah: So Burnell I have to ask you, you and Amber, you guys seem pretty close, you knew this question was coming. So what’s going on with you guys are you dating?
Burnell: I wouldn’t say dating because I feel like we have a lot on our plate and we’re both trying to juggle our careers and trying to make something out of it, but at the same time we really really do like each other and we’re just at a stage where were just getting to know each other and hopefully after the tour we might have something.
Bekah: Alright so it’s more than just a crush?
Burnell: Yeah definitely, definitely.
Bekah: I know it’s tough but can you pinpoint the top two? Who will be in the finale?
Burnell: All of them have the potential, it’s so hard, it’s so hard to predict anything because you just never know. But I will say this, all of them are very talented and whoever makes the top two, it’s going to be an amazing show. So I am just ready to see who it’s going to be.
Bekah: You also think it’s going to be a girl because you said that already.
Burnell: I mean it could definitely be a girl and Lazaro. I mean you know, you just never know and whatever happens happens.
Trey: Looking back at your experience who would you say was the more helpful judge; are you team Nicki or team Mariah?
Burnell: I am team all of them, but um I do feel that Nicki Minaj on the panel was very important and very necessary because you know, we needed that tough love. She was the type of person that okay is not good enough and I respect that because that’s like a mother figure, you know “I don’t want you coming home with no C’s I want all A’s.” You know I respect that honesty and I love her so much. I can’t even explain how much I love her, um especially after the night I went home because she was like heartbroken and I wasn’t expecting that, I knew that she cared about me as a person and as an artist, but I was not expecting her to react the way she did and the fact that she did is amazing and I can’t wait to work with her.
Bekah: Burnell Taylor thank you so much your so talented we loved watching you on the show
Burnell: And, I love ya'll!
